SPRA Dinner Dance 2013

The SPRA Dinner Dance on Friday 8 March, in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow, gave guests the opportunity to enjoy the company of their friends and colleagues, while at the same time pausing to recognise the achievements of the polymer industry and, in particular, the success of individuals starting out on their careers.

This year the main table hosts were Rosti UK, Rosti McKechnie, Carclo Technical Plastics, Arburg, Engel, Hardie Polymers, Plastribution, Summit Systems, Safeglass, Solutions4Polymers, Sumitomo Demag, Billion, (all SPRA Corporate Members) Krauss Maffei and Staffplus. Also represented were Wittmann Battenfeld, Avanti Environmental, DS Smith Plastics and Cogent SSC.

Barry Coughlan, SPRA President, and his top table guests were piped in by Pipe Major Iain Grant in the traditional fashion, before making a hasty exit for a fire alarm. After the resumption the piper was back on duty to pipe in the haggis and deliver the ‘Address to the Haggis’ with customary panache.

After dinner Barry Coughlan introduced a number of award winners. Colin Hindle, Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Horners, congratulated Amy Keenan, a Quality Process Technician at Rosti UK in Larkhall, on being acclaimed as UK Gold Standard Polymer Apprentice of the Year for 2012, an award she had already received in London in February. Colin also presented Iain Calder, an engineering apprentice at DS Smith Plastics Foams in Livingstone, with the runner-up award for the Polymer Apprentice of the Year. Barry observed that it was a boost to the polymer sector in Scotland to land both awards.

The SPRA Scholarship, this year sponsored by ARBURG UK, was presented by Simon Wrighton, Sales Director at ARBURG, to Nathan Minors, a final year student on the BSc (Hons) Product Design Engineering Programme at Edinburgh Napier University, for his performance in polymer subjects.

Barry’s final award was an SPRA Fellowship to Sheena Geddes for her outstanding contribution to the Association during her period as Membership Secretary since 1999.

The guests were then entertained by after-dinner speaker, Peter Brown, who wandered through his life history with a series of amusing anecdotes which appealed to the guests. After the formal part of the proceedings, guests invaded the dance floor to the music of the popular Life and Soul, while others caught up with old friends and tried their luck with the Tombola.

The general feedback was that David Barlow, SPRA Social Convener, and his team had put together yet another wonderful evening and already thoughts are turning to the 2014 event. Get your advance booking in now.
