SPRA Dinner Dance 2012

Pipe Major Ian Grant addressing the haggis, watched by SPRA President, Barry Coughlan, and his top table guests

If the annual Dinner Dance of the Scottish Plastics and Rubber Association is an indicator of economic well being, the increased attendance at this year’s event on 2 March in Glasgow suggests that the polymer sector in Scotland can face the future with a degree of optimism.

Table hosts included the ‘regulars’, Rosti UK, Carclo Technical Plastics, Engel UK, Arburg, Hardie Polymers and Safeglass, supplemented by more recent supporters, Summit Systems, Sumitomo Demag, Staffplus, Avanti Environmental and Ultrapolymers. Also represented among the guests were other SPRA Corporate Members, Billion, Balmoral Tanks, Shore Design, Plastribution, Plastech, Edinburgh Napier University and Glasgow University, as well as representatives from the BPF and Smithers Rapra. Also making a return appearance was John Adams, SPRA President 1993-95.

The top table guests were piped into the hall by Pipe Major Ian Grant, who followed later with the traditional ‘Address to the Haggis’. SPRA President, Barry Coughlan, COO Europe for Rosti, welcomed SPRA members and their guests and introduced his top table guests, who included Hamish Champ, Editor of PRW, Prof Averil Macdonald, University of Reading, who is a frequent visitor to Scotland to deliver the popular SPRA Schools Lecture ‘Fantastic Plastic’, and Colin Hindle, Edinburgh Napier University, a former SPRA President and currently Education Officer.

After dinner Barry Coughlan presented awards to two of Colin’s current students, an SPRA studentship to Ross Henderson for his academic performance on the BSc Product Design Engineering programme and the President’s Quaich to Stuart Martin, a part-time student from SCA Foams for his performance on the BEng (Hons) Polymer Engineering Programme.

To popular acclaim Barry also presented Colin Hindle with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and mining Outstanding Service Award for his contribution, over the last 30 years, to the SPRA and its predecessor, the Plastics and Rubber Institute Scottish Section.

Robbie Glen entertaining the guests
The main speaker of the evening, Robbie Glen, entertained the guests with his unique delivery of stories drawn from his experience as a prison governor.

The convivial evening carried on into the small hours with dancing to the band ‘Life and Soul’ and the customary networking with old and new friends.

SPRA Social Convener, David Barlow, and his team are to be congratulated on yet another memorable Dinner Dance. Planning is already underway for the 2013 Dinner Dance and bookings will start shortly.
