September

Tues 21 September

Topic: Rapid Prototyping
Venue: University of Strathclyde, Glasgow
Time: 6.00 for 6.30 pm
Speaker: David Cunningham, University of Strathclyde

Rapid Prototyping offers benefits to manufacturers through reducing development time, avoiding costly mistakes and providing opportunities to refine the design process. These techniques are becoming increasingly used in the plastics industry and this is an opportunity to learn more about the relative advantages of different rapid prototyping techniques.

The Digital Design and Manufacturing Studio in the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering Management (DMEM) includes Fused Deposition Modelling, 3D Printing, 3 and 4 axis CNC machines/routers, Laser cutter/etcher, vacuum forming and casting.

David Cunningham, Technical Support Officer responsible for the Rapid Prototyping Facility, will introduce the evening with an overview of rapid prototyping techniques. The following tour of the facilities will include demonstrations of the techniques.

Registration:

This event is free but the organisers would like an indication of attendance.

October

Wednesday 27 October

Topic: R W Thomson Lecture
Venue: Edinburgh Napier University, Craiglockhart Campus
Time: 6.30 for 7.00 pm
Speaker: Prof W M Banks, President SCOTETA

Robert William Thomson
(1822-1873)

This is the first in a series of Prestige Lectures,

in memory of R W Thomson,
the prolific inventor from Stonehaven,

organised by the Local Societies in Scotland, affiliated to the
Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining:

Scottish Association for Metals,
The Mining Institute of Scotland
and
Scottish Plastics and Rubber Association

"Engineering the Future:
Learning from Past Innovators"
,

delivered by
Prof William M Banks
BSc MSc PhD CEng FIMechE FIMMM FREng FRSE

The Mining Institute
of Scotland

Professor Banks is currently the Emeritus Professor of Advanced Materials in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, President of SCOTETA and a Past President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). He is also a past Chairman of the Engineering Professors' Council, only the second Scot to have held this post. His research work has majored on composite materials and adhesively bonded joints. He has published around 200 papers.

Professor Banks' lecture, will explore the major historical, societal and engineering factors behind some of the best innovators from the past and ask what led them to have such an impact. The fundamental qualities and skills required for successful innovation will be examined and used to see how today's engineers could follow the examples from the past and apply present day technology to the current and future needs of society, particularly in the areas of skills needs, energy, climate change, health and the aging population. Research and development in materials engineering will be used to illustrate the possibilities.
Registration:
This event is free but admission wiil be by ticket only.
